Children´s Toys of Today

So let´s have a look at what kind of toys are available for our children, how much value they have and how they influence our children.

Most toys now are based on fashion brands and characters from TV and film which can not only impose upon that wonderful, abundant world of imagination in a child´s mind but also result in children losing interest in these toys quickly once they are out of fashion.

Countless toys and hundreds of pounds later, we as parents find ourselves with a cupboard full of unwanted toys that have been barely played with and worse children look at the pile of toys as boring and valueless junk.

As parents this situation can leave you feeling saddened and frustrated. It seems that fashion and consumerism are tainting children at an early age, leaving them ´empty´ and without ‘interest´ in toys that can cost a lot but have little or no value.

We value our children highly and because plastic and polyester toys are relatively cheap, we tend to buy our children new toys regularly. When a toy breaks or goes out of fashion, it is thrown away and a new one bought. This in turn reinforces the current "throwaway" culture where nothing is special - simply cheaply replaceable.

It´s worth looking at how this develops down the line for our children´s children, their children and their children again, and so on - it is just possible that some of us might meet this generation. Ultimately it is unsustainable and the question is not ‘if´ we need to change this but rather ´when´ we change this.

Woodland Children believe this process of change needs to start now. It will take generations to steer the inertia of the global ‘throwaway´ culture to one of sustainability and value.

The wonderful thing about all this is that you can start to change the world today through the decisions you make - not least in the choice of toys you choose for your children.
